An Insight into “Stabat Mater” – Haydn Concert

A moving and uplifting concert that journeys from a beloved traditional hymn and an intimate song of praise to a poignant work of remembrance, culminating in one of Joseph Haydn’s great masterpieces — Stabat Mater.

The concert will open with “Amazing Grace,” one of the world’s best-loved and most familiar hymns, followed by Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria,” D. 839, in an arrangement for string quintet by Ze’ev Steinberg. The programme will continue with Giacomo Puccini’s brief yet profound Requiem, composed in memory of Giuseppe Verdi for mixed choir, viola, strings and organ.

At the heart of the concert is Joseph Haydn’s monumental Stabat Mater, based on the ancient Latin text portraying the grief of Mary as she stands at the foot of the cross upon which her son is crucified. The work moves between intense drama, sorrow and faith, and Classical restraint and clarity, combining rich writing for soloists, choir and instrumental ensemble.

Performed by four soloists, the Ramat Gan Chamber Choir, the Zhana Gandelman String Quintet and wind players, under the direction of conductor Hanna Tzur, the work will come vividly to life in the unique acoustics of Kiryat Ye’arim Church, offering the audience a powerful musical experience filled with beauty and emotion.
