This concert presents two of Henry Purcell’s greatest works—two contrasting musical prayers, written only months apart, both in honor of the same woman: Queen Mary II of England.
The first, Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary, is a ceremonial, hauntingly restrained elegy, built on a slow tempo, baroque trumpets, and solemn dialogues between choir and orchestra.
The second, Come, Ye Sons of Art, composed shortly before her birthday, is a colorful and exuberant ode
full of flowing counterpoint, virtuosic vocal lines, and a spirit of joy and grandeur.
Together, these two works - one written for farewell, the other for celebration—create a singular musical moment of remembrance, legacy, and human spirit.
